Feeling Behind? Here’s Your Reminder to Trust Your Path

Let’s face it: we’ve all had those moments where we feel like we’re not moving fast enough, achieving enough, or checking off all the boxes we think we should be. Whether it's scrolling through social media and seeing your friend's home remodel, or hearing about someone’s promotion, or attending a friend's wedding, it’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking, Am I behind?
But here’s the truth: you’re not behind. You’re exactly where you’re meant to be.
There’s No One Else on Your Path
Hillary McVeigh’s quote sums it up perfectly: “To be behind infers that you are behind someone walking the same path as you. But there is no one on your exact path.”
Boom. Mic drop.
Think about it: your path is yours alone. No one else has lived your exact experiences, dreamed your dreams, or faced your unique challenges. Comparing your journey to someone else’s is like comparing apples to oranges. Sure, they’re both fruit, but they’re totally different. The same goes for your life journey versus anyone else’s.
Trusting Your Gut and Creating Your Desired Life
The beauty of life is that you’re the one creating it moment by moment. Every decision, every pivot, every leap of faith, every lesson—these are all pieces of the puzzle you’re putting together. And guess what? There is no “right” timeline or sequence for how that puzzle comes together.
Following your intuition might not always make logical sense in the moment. Maybe you’ve felt called to switch careers, move to a new city, or take a break to prioritize your mental health. These decisions can feel scary because they might not align with society’s traditional expectations. But trust me, they’re shaping a life that’s fully, authentically yours.
Direction Over Speed
We live in a world obsessed with speed—faster results, quicker success, instant gratification. But as Hillary wisely says, “Direction is far more important than speed.”
Think of it like hiking. Some people sprint up the trail, while others take a slower pace, pausing to enjoy the view or rest along the way. Neither approach is wrong—but what matters is that you’re headed toward the summit. When you prioritize direction over speed, you’re allowing yourself the grace to move at a pace that feels right for you, without burning out or losing sight of your goals.
Trusting the Unfolding
Here’s the part that’s both exciting and nerve-wracking: life is unfolding in ways you can’t always see or understand in the moment. Have you ever looked back and realized that something you thought was a setback was actually a setup for something amazing? That’s the magic of trusting the process.
So, if you’re feeling stuck or impatient, remind yourself that growth is happening beneath the surface. Seeds take time to sprout. Butterflies don’t emerge overnight. The same goes for you—you’re evolving, even if you can’t fully see it yet.
Keep Moving Forward at Your Own Pace
The next time you catch yourself thinking you’re “behind,” take a deep breath. You’re exactly where you need to be. You’re carving out your own unique path, one step at a time.
And just like in yoga (you knew I’d bring it back to yoga, right?), it’s not about nailing every pose perfectly or keeping up with the person next to you. It’s about showing up, breathing through the discomfort, and staying present.
So, whether you’re sprinting, strolling, or even pausing to catch your breath, keep moving forward. Your journey is unfolding beautifully—in ways you’ll look back on one day and think, Wow, that was exactly what I needed.
Remember: there’s no such thing as being behind in life. There’s only your path, your pace, and your unfolding story. Trust it. Embrace it. Keep walking it.
xoxo, Nicole
